Senior Apartments

One matter of significant importance to seniors and their loved ones when looking for an apartment is safety. As people age they become a little more restricted than in their younger years; finding an apartment to meet their needs is important to their health and safety. Each room of the apartment needs to be equipped with specific features. In their living room, for example, lighting should be easily accessible. For their own safety, your loved should never have to walk into a dark room. It’s also important to have a decent amount of outlets in a room so that cords are never in the way of walking. A fall could be very damaging to an individual of later years. If the room is carpeted you will also want to make sure the carpeting is flat and free from lumps or ridges which can cause tripping. Of course after choosing an apartment you’ll want to be sure to keep furniture and curtains a safe distance away from heaters or baseboard heat.

In the kitchen caution needs to be expressed as well. Make sure appliances work properly and that there are no leaks. Cupboard space is also important and most seniors prefer storage that is easy for them to access. Taking that into consideration, it’s more appropriate to have cupboard spacing at lower levels. A sturdy step stool is a handy tool to keep in the kitchen. A working fire extinguisher is also an important tool to keep in the kitchen. Smoke and carbon dioxide detectors should also be supplied and installed for apartment safety.

Bedrooms should be maintained very similar to the living room area. They should also be equipped with a phone jack so that a phone can be near the bedside. This is important for security and safety. Stairways, passageways, and hallways should also be of importance in your determining a suitable home. Carpeting and tiles should be tight to the floor with no lumps, ridges, tears, or cracks that could cause a risk for falling. Be sure that all stairs are sturdy and equipped with a safety railing.

Bathrooms can be a significant risk factor if they aren’t accommodating to the senior individual seeking residence. Showers and/or tubs should have a non-slip surface. A bar should be installed to aid in getting in and out of the tub safely. The bathroom floor should also be safe by being designed with a non-slip exterior. Water temperature is best if be kept under 120 degrees. If you are choosing an apartment specifically expected to fulfill a seniors needs then it should also be designed with a bar to make toilet use more manageable. Fire exits are also a concern so planning ahead for emergency needs are crucial.

When looking for an apartment keep a record of what features are available with a specific apartment and what ones will need to be provided by the tenant. Make sure the apartment you choose is well kept by maintenance providers and that there are no concerns with the owners or tenants. The environment will be largely important. Your loved one won’t be happy living amongst loud or rude neighbors. Health, safety, and happiness are the keys to accommodating those senior years.
