Senior Independent Living

Senior Independent Living is an excellent option for those who are still very active yet, they may not be able to maintain their home anymore due to finances, physical maintenance, etc. They are similar to any apartment or single family development but they are equipped with special services such as security. They are most often community based and include various activities for seniors to enjoy. They are significant for allowing seniors to remain active and social as they age. Too often the aged seem to become isolated, independent living prevents this from progressing.

There are a few things you may consider before choosing independent living as your retiring option. First, decide whether you can successfully live independently. Secondly, if you have a medical condition take into careful consideration what type of care you will need in the future. How soon you may need care and whether this specific care can be easily maintained through an outside service are important factors. If you have a condition which may later limit mobility it’s best to consider a community which offers some housekeeping services.

Before choosing a specific community you’ll have to decide on geographic location and what independent living communities are available there. Make sure the location will accommodate your basic needs such as access to the market, medical needs, and doctor’s offices. If you no longer drive you may also want to find out what transportation services are available. If you’re an outdoor person you may wish to be located near a park. If you’re the literary type a library may be important to you. Perhaps you’re into fitness, if so, you may want to inquire if the community has its own gym or if there is one close by.

If safety concerns you consider asking about the security in the community. How do they accommodate emergencies? Is each unit equipped with smoke detectors and extinguishers? Are their easy access exits in case of a fire? Who maintains the property and is it well kept? Are meals prepared or are you specifically designated to provide your own? Are laundering services provided? If not, you may want to know the location of the nearest Laundromat.

Once you’ve covered all your essential needs you’ve probably narrowed down your choices. Now, you can inquire about activities specific to your interests. You may also want to be accommodated with some benefits such as salon, barber, or spa. Some communities even offer indoor pools. These are your years to unwind, relax, and enjoy yourself. Independent living is designed for you to do this in the most convenient manner. The location you choose should be designed to accommodate all the resources you’ll need as well as provide you with a variety of activities to offer you the relaxing lifestyle you deserve in a safe and friendly environment. Be sure to visit the community, meet the staff, explore the surroundings, and meet some of the residents before making your final decision. This will insure that you’ve chosen the location that’s right for you.
