Virginia Beach Housing

Virginia Beach is a great place to retire. The weather is relatively warm most of the year with average winter lows around 30 degrees and summer highs averaging less than 90 degrees. Virginia Beach is very “senior friendly” city. The Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation (VBCDC) has a housing program to provide affordable housing for seniors 62 and older with very low income. The VBCDC works in conjunction with the both government agency’s (Department of Social Services and Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia) along with AARP to find seniors appropriate living quarters. Virginia Beach reduces personal property taxes for low income seniors and provides tax exemptions or freezes on real estate taxes.

There are a number of different housing options for seniors in Virginia Beach including independent living, retirement communities, assisted living and nursing care. Independent living can be either in a facility with no or minimal medical facilities or in their own apartment or house. For seniors living in their own place, Virginia Beach has a fairly good public transportation system. Besides the usually 50% senior discount, the Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) provides 15 bus routes within and through Virginia Beach with some routes continuing to Norfolk and the Naval Station. There is even a trolley which provides transportation around the Virginia Beach oceanfront area. The city also has a “Meals on Wheels” program for those seniors who cannot cook for themselves.

There are a number of different retirement communities in Virginia Beach for the independent senior who want the camaraderie of having other seniors nearby but still want to be independent. These communities offer many different exciting activities. As you would expect, many senior communities are situated by the water and you can find excellent adult facilities near extensive wooded areas. Active seniors can choose from golf, swimming, tennis, fitness centers, billiards, horseshoes and shuffleboard, just to name a few choices. Because of the great climate, many have beautiful gardens, walking paths and barbeque areas. These apartments have kitchens but many provide dining services for those residents who prefer not to cook or eat alone. Many offer shuttle bus service for shopping excursions.

For those requiring a personal care and medical alternatives, Virginia Beaches has some of the best retirement communities. Many of these homes provide multiple levels of care which is really helpful for the senior. This allows the patient to stay within the same facility and while just moving to a different section as they require additional services and care. It will be much easier for your loved one to adjust to with similar surroundings and they can often continue friendships with fellow residents.

With over 55 different senior communities to choose from, Virginia Beach offers a wide range of living choices for the elderly. If you or your parent requires assisted living facilities, many of these communities offer skilled nursing service with personal care. For the elderly requiring more care such as hospice, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s care, there are also a number of superior options within the Virginia Beach area. With great weather and beautiful landscape, Virginia Beach is an ideal retirement city offering many choices for our elder population.
